Why, now that’s a question

I am off on a through hike, the Te Araroa. Only doing half though, the South Island. It’s about 1250k. Aren’t you already doing something Roy 🤔, well yes, yes I am in fact. I still am set on finishing my bike pack across Canada. Think of this as I am working my way back to Ottawa. The interesting way.

I am sitting here at Hobart airport contemplating my choices. I am a bit nervous. Not sure where that’s coming from.

I am leaving this very comfortable lifestyle hanging out at this awesome beach house. Thanks Rhys. Maybe that’s it? You would have to be crazy to give that up 🤪.

Then there’s the unknown. Never done a through hike before. My longest was 5 days. This is more like 70. Pretty much the same as bike packing I told myself. Do I deep down know what’s coming? Maybe?

Lana had wanted to join me on this one, but remember, she is the smart one. It’s not even a year since her hip surgeries and she wants to be sure her strength is back before attempting a big hike. Makes perfect sense. 🤞 Hopefully she will join us along the way. Toughest part for me on this trip is not having my meuse along. Is this the source of my apprehension? Maybe?

I could go on, but the bottom line. I was always the kid that jumped first and found out about the landing later. You can try as you will, to take make a man out of the kid but you can never take kid out of the man. And so, off we go.

Why, now that’s a question

Mmmm I got nothing

It’s the end of the first stage of the trip. 🥲 I have to admit it is with mixed emotions I have arrived here in Ottawa. Crazy, not sure I believe I’m really here. Just shows you how putting one foot in front of the other or one peddle stroke at a time can get you places you never imagined possible. I am sure in the next few days it will start to get real. For now I must celebrate! Don’t have to of course, but it does seem fitting.

I will post some more details about the trip in the coming days but here’s a few rough stats. Who does not love stats.

Luxury Life

I made my own breakfast before heading off. Decided to use up my supplies so it’s Tea, granola, cheese and my last bagel. Not too shabby. My thoughts were to head out on the trail and stop at White lake. There were several lodges and campgrounds up there. I am sure I will find something, right?

I had been told by some cyclists that the route was real nice. I was not disappointed. Lots of quiet gravel roads and tracks. By the time I had put in 70k I had reached White lake. That’s where the problems started. First option Cedar Cove Resort. It was closed and after asking around I found a person working who told me only seasonal sites. Ouch, another camping option bites the dust. I then phoned another campsite. Was told the same thing, only seasonal. It was time to think of other options.

I had a warm shower option down the road. It was only another 15k, I can make it. I sent a message. By the time I reached the area where the warm showers host was, I had still not heard anything. Oh well, it was still only 4:00pm I’ll push on. By 6:00 I was riding downtown Almonte. No camping here that’s for sure. I was pretty hungry too. I found out later my warm showers host had run into phone problems. Murphys Law. Mmmm. How do I make lemonade. Treat myself to a hotel. Found this great hotel for a great price, just one room left.

The Monte. What a great spot. When you live in a tent a 3 star hotel is the lap of luxury. Add to that Peggy who runs the place. It was awesome. Great room, great continental breakfast and really good service. Thanks Peggy. It was time to celebrate. A shower, off to the pub for supper and a wonderful bed to fall asleep in. Enough of a reason to celebrate right there.

Celebration?

Brenda and Jim are great people, we had a wonderful visit and the breakfast, was, way better than anything I could put together. Thanks so much for the hospitality. It has me thinking, is the Sherwood Park Campground, the friendliest campground in Canada 🤔.

It was 10:30 before I left, definitely the latest departure of my trip. About 20k down the road I stopped for lunch. There were a couple of cyclists there who I chatted with. They strongly recommended stopping in at the Brew Pub in Sharbot lake to try their IPA. One cannot not take that advice and since it was at my destination a definite win win.

After a great time at the Kick and Push Brewing company and yes, their IPA was delicious it was a short ride to my camping spot at the provincial park. I was given this amazingly secluded spot overlooking the lake, nice! As I was putting up my tent I heard a voice through the trees, my neighbour was inviting me for a beer. I had two at the brewery, brought one home with me and was invited for a fourth. This was turning into a big evening for Roy. I am only about 200k from Ottawa, maybe the cycling gods want me to celebrate. Yes, this must be the case. Who am I to argue with the gods.

Rest Day!

Rest Day!

One Step Closer

Well that night went well. No anxiety at all. I guess when you have slept in your tent for over 100 nights you get comfortable with it. Fell asleep to the sound of the local Owl. 🦉
Woke up to the dew dripping on my tent from the trees above. Fall is here.

I had about 40k of gravel road to get to the next town. I was up and off by about 8:00am. A beautiful morning riding amongst the trees and lakes. The leaves are definitely starting to change colours which makes it great to ride through.

It has happened again. I stopped at Sherwood Park Campground for the night. Dan and Katherine own the place and as soon as they knew I was helping Indspire they would not let me pay for my campsite. We agreed for me make a donation. This is becoming a habit, and I am liking it! A little later I got invited to the pot luck supper. On the way I had a beer with one of the campers and then enjoyed an amazing meal. The vibe at this campsite is amazing. Such great people. Thanks for the kindness everyone. It was such fun meeting you all.

Night in the Bush

Life’s funny. I am now going through a stretch where everyone is being so nice. Well, I must say most of the time people are nice but the last few days have been amazing. The lady at the front desk of the campsite gave me a deal. She told me Stephane had stayed there a few days before me. I am coming for ya buddy! Then I stop for a coffee at St Ola’s Station. Food, coffee, I get internet, power for my devices, they offer a place for me to stay, water fill for my bottles and even give me an extra cookie, how nice is that. Then I head down to The Rustic Roadhouse restaurant and bakery. Maggie and her team were awesome. If you ever get a chance check out her place. It’s awesome. What does she do, gives me Butter Tarts for the road. Check out her coffee mug. Thanks Maggie.

A little side note. One off my tent poles broke. Tried setting up my tent without fixing it. A no go! Woke up to water dripping on me in the morning. Well, McGiver time. Came up with a solution. Flipped the broken end and used the metal sleeve to splint the break. Works great! It’s the little things that make you happy on the road.

Tonight I am camping in the bush. As I sit her I realize it’s the first time I will be alone in the wilderness camping in the bush. Wow, how did I manage that. Between riding buddies and other people being around or camping in designated campgrounds I guess I just managed to avoid it. Well not tonight. The two big fears I had when I left on the trip were bears and travelling alone. Let’s put these fears to bed, should we.

Return to the Wild

Return to the Wild

Misty Morning

After that crazy thunder storm I am surprised how dry I stayed. By the end of the storm my tent was raining inside. Not a good situation. Luckily the rain stopped after about an hour. Totally saved me. Thank you rain gods. 🙏

The morning was cool and very damp. My sleeping bad was damp, my clothes were damp, the rest of my stuff, well, wet would be a better description. Fittingly, I broke camp on a very misty morning.

15k in I stopped at Franks restaurant. I love these little local places. Great breakfast. After a long an leisurely meal the mist had lifted and the weather too, I had a good day ahead of me. The rest of the day was a great day of riding and an early stop at a provincial camp ground. Nice, time enough to allow the suns rays to dry all my gear. After a few hours I and my stuff were dry. A big deal for me, that’s for sure. Celebrate life’s great moments, that’s what I say. So off I went. The Lakeside Roadhouse was right next to the campground. Cheers to being dry!

Last day of rain, I think

My AirBnB was interesting to say the least. I don’t think the owners lived in the house and it felt more like a youth hostel than your typical AirBnB. Must of been the random dude sleeping on the couch. My room was clean and it was reasonable so all good.

Before leaving Aurora I had decided to stop for coffee at Mondo Del Cafe. When I entered I noticed a guy standing at the counter sipping an espresso. Wow, flashback, the only place I have seen that was in Italy. Sure enough the guy was Italian and loved their coffee. I did too. Farhad makes a great cup of coffee and if you’re looking for a good cafe in Aurora check it out, it’s awesome.

It’s been several days now of darting between rain showers and today was no difference. On the good side I have been eating real well. I ended the day at a small campground. Set up my tent and was about to scope out the laundry. More rain. In the tent I went. Turns out to be the biggest rain storm of my summer. I am sitting here typing as the rain pounds the tent. The odd drop is making it through. Wish me luck. 🌧️🌧️🌧️🌧️🙏🫣

Last day of rain, I think

My AirBnB was interesting to say the least. I don’t think the owners lived in the house and it felt more like a youth hostel than your typical AirBnB. Must of been the random dude sleeping on the couch. My room was clean and it was reasonable so all good.

Before leaving Aurora I had decided to stop for coffee at Mondo Del Cafe. When I entered I noticed a guy standing at the counter sipping an espresso. Aura of the big TO

I sure felt the fall weather this morning. After several days of on/off showers my camping gear was getting a bit damp. Add to it the temperature dropping and a cold wind, needless to say it was a refreshing start. About 3 k from the campground I had revelation. Ahhh, I forgot my lock. I have done this before, just so you know. I was not leaving it, back I rode!

The day was windy but no rain so I was very happy. Gravel and paved back roads interspersed with the usual random trail sections. Some of these trails look like they had not been used in years. Gota love the GNBR. Always interesting.

Stopped for a coffee and a bit of breakfast at a little coffee shop in the town of Schomberg. Great little spot but I definitely felt like I had come out of the bush. I must admit to being a bit discombobulated. The TO licra crowds were in full force. Not the friendliest crews I must say. Probably just the reality of the big city. Add that to a pretty loud and opinionated patron next to me and I had this giant urge to move on. Takes a fair bit to get me out of a coffee shop. I think I am more of a small town boy than I realized or maybe where this trip has taken me. Who knows, I will have to think about it. 🤔

There are very few options to camp around here but I did find one about 20k outside Aurora. For some reason, I rarely if ever phone ahead, this time I decided to call. Good thing too, they no longer take campers. Mmmmm, time to get innovative. Found an AirBnB for $65. Not fancy but hey I have paid more to camp. We live in interesting times. 🤔

I think I am more of a small town boy than I realized or maybe where this trip has taken me. Who knows, I will have to think about it. 🤔

There are very few options to camp around here but I did find one about 20k outside Aurora. For some reason, I rarely if ever phone ahead, this time I decided to call. Good thing too, they no longer take campers. Mmmmm, time to get innovative. Found an AirBnB for $65. Not fancy but hey I have paid more to camp. We live in interesting times. 🤔

Decisions Made

Maybe not quite yet, but soon enough. That will leave Quebec and the Maritimes to complete the route next summer. You guys, Canada is a big country!

So tomorrow I start Ontario route section II. Hopefully the weather improves a bit. Makes the riding way more enjoyable. 🌧️🤞🚵🏻‍♂️🌧️

Decisions Made

It was a dreary day

Cloudy with showers today. There’s a section up ahead of me I really want to enjoy. Supposedly today it’s not that great weather wise, but gets better moving forward.

With that swirling in my mind I woke up in the nice dry bunkie. I could hear the rain on the roof. As predicted, that settles it. I would have an easy day and finish close to the start of the Mono Cliffs provincial park. I did the first 15k and found a place for breakfast in Dundalk. Then between showers I peddled to Shelburne for lunch. Gave me a chance to get caught up on some calls, do some planning and charge up all my devices.

By about 3:00 it was time to find a place to camp. There was a campsite ~10k out of town. I knew it would be crazy expensive, it was, but I decided to go for it anyway. I wanted a shower and a nice place to hang out if the weather got worse. It’s a nice place but man, Ontario camping is crazy 🤪

Paying it Forward

After saying my goodbyes to Davey, he was heading home today, I hoped on my bike and continued. It felt a little funny ridding off by myself. I had company for a month. Thanks Davey and Stephane.

First order of business was to find a breakfast stop. Had a couple of cups of coffee and a great breakfast, great start to the day. I did run into a bit of hassle about an hour later though. I have seen numerous road closed signs on my trip. Not a single one actually had a problem my bike could not solve. Today, I met my match. When I arrived at the closure I could see it was a new bridge being put in. Also, lots of work trucks. I approached the workers to ask if there was a way I could get around. Well, they were not in the best of spirits and the there supervisor tersely told me to go back and take the detour. He was no amused. Off I went. Luckily I only had to back track about 3k and then another 3k bypass. Could have been way worse.

Later in the afternoon I stopped for a rest at a little store. While I was waiting in line at the till the lady in front of me was buying a coffee. She could not find her wallet so I offered to pay. She was very thankful, I just told her to pay it forward. I really like the concept. The little kindness’s always seem to come back at you. It did not take long. I arrived in Flesherton (funny name) not much open and pretty done for the day, I must say. On the map it showed a camping option. I gave Ben a call. Well, Ben offered me his little bunkie just outside of town. It’s awesome. So here I am enjoying this amazing spot in the woods. Kindness works. 🙏🚵🏻‍♂️

Paying it Forward

First Stephane heard the ruckus and was trying to get them to leave. Soon Dave was up too and the both of them were battling the hungry dinner guests. Roy, well, he was sleeping through the whole thing. After much commotion the guys finally got the raccoons to retreat into the forest. Well done boys. I can’t believe I missed it.

The riding was again really good today. Lots of quiet back roads and paths with just enough technical stuff to keep it interesting. Add into that a brilliant cup of coffee at the “Lost Art Expresso”. All in all a pretty much perfect day of riding.

It’s a good thing too because as it so happens it’s the last day of “les frères verts”. Dave is heading back home after about a month on the road and Stephane continues on GMBR tomorrow. I will spend a day or two here in Owen Sound before continuing. It’s been a lot of fun having companions on the road, so many good laughs but all good things must come to an end. Salut mes amis.

We were super lucky today riding the back roads of the Bruce peninsula. Even got the chance to ride some of the Bruce hiking trail. Very cool. By 2:00 we were already in our proposed camping location of Lion’s Head. Very nice little lakeshore town. We would have stayed too if the campground was not full. Oh well, it would mean a bit more riding. Luckily everything worked out, we ended up finding a great campground in Hope Bay. Once again calamity averted. 🤙🚵🏻‍♂️

Shortest day ever

With only 5k ridden today I am not sure a blog post is warranted. We were up and packed in time to catch the 8:45am ferry. Oops, the morning ferry actually left at 11:00am. No worries time for breakfast anyway. After a great ferry ride over to Tobermory it was planning time. Since the day was virtually over we decided to stay. Had a great meal, did some laundry, had coffee and ice cream, we then headed out in search of a place to stay🤞. Found a great campsite just on the edge of town. Another great day has come to a close. I am thinking things will improve tomorrow. End of the long weekend, let September begin. Oooh, I guess I am running out of time. 🤔

Manitoulin Island

Rather than the riding let’s talk about the awesome people we met today. First, look at the amazing campground we stayed in at Asprey Lake. Great spot and reasonable price to camp, Thank you Asprey Lake Resort.

Loved the Church Mouse cafe in Whitefish Falls. Larry and Nikki run the place and also have cabins to rent. Great cafe, So friendly, so nice. Supper good deal on the cabins. They are really nice and very reasonably priced. If you are ever in the area definitely check it out.

We ended up crossing onto Manitoulin Island at Little Current. What a cool little town. The Lady that runs the local bike store was very nice and helpful. Breakaway is a great shop. After getting our bike gear sorted it was time for lunch. The “Bear”, appropriate, was recommended to us. Run by this very gregarious Ukrainian chef his restaurant specializes in Sushi and Ramen. Food was amazing. You can’t make this stuff up.

After a pretty long day of riding we pulled into our campground for the night. Crazy expensive again. Oh well, let’s keep riding. We were all hungry so we stopped at a restaurant along the way. Could not get in without a reservation, definitely feeling the effects of the long weekend in a tourist area. The lady we were dealing with was awesome. Set us up on a picnic table outside and delivered our takeout there. Probably best we were not in the restaurant anyway. We were finishing off our supper just as the sun was setting. Definitely running out of options.

After a bit of investigation we came up with an idea. Supposedly there was a town campground near the ferry we were catching the next day. It meant another 15k but, well, what do you do. Sure enough after 130k on the road we found the campsite. Set up camp in our damp tents and settled in for the night. It all worked out once again.

Both types of Day

After a couple of rain delay days, we needed the rest anyway, it was time we were off again. The start of the day could not be better. Clear skies, cooler temperatures and fabulous back roads. We stopped for lunch in the little town of Blind River. The last stretch of riding took us periodically on the Trans Canada Highway. Not my favourite to be sure.

While riding along we met up with some fellow bike tourers. Now I have not run into a single bike tourer (other than Stephane) since I left the mountains. A bit of a novelty for sure. Well, this intrepid family knocked it out of the park. Parents Vessi & Ben with their daughters Morgan 7 & Mila 5. They left Montreal a month ago and are planning on riding around the world. A two year adventure. Wow. I am so impressed.

We wished the family good luck and continued on our way. By 6:00pm we were pulling into the campsite. We got a bit of a nasty surprise. $55 each for a single campsite. What 🤪 $165 for a single tent site. A new record for sure. We just could not do it. We decided to go for supper at the diner across the street and eat. Always helpful when you have to solve a problem.

The diner was awesome. Great meal, real homemade taste and fun lady who served us. A real card. We also got lots of advice from the patrons on good camping spots. We had a plan we would head for a rest area just down the road. Only 8 more k.

The rest area turned out great. A real nice spot along the river. Hopefully it works out. 🤞

When a 20k ride turns into 100k

We only had a short ride planned. Get to Sue St Marie and call it a day. The ride up to the border turned out to be a bit more eventful than usual. First we lost Dave. He missed a turn and our cell coverage was very spotty. After a bit of guess work and some timely texts it all worked out. Michigan could not let us leave without one more atv track with deep sand. The funny part was the deep sand
was on the very last km of the track. A farewell gift!

We crossed the bridge and went through Canada customs. We were back home. That was it. Really kind of anticlimactic. I had always thought there was no way I could complete the whole GNBR route in one summer. My goal was to at least get to Sue St Marie which is about half way distance wise. So here I was, August 26th and I made it half way already. I still have time. After a couple of rest days I would continue and see how far east I can get. Let’s go Ontario!

Well, not sure how to say this but did not get a great vibe about the Sue. Had a hard time finding a good coffee shop, no camping near the town and the budget hotels seemed to be a bit suspect. Add onto that a warning about bike theft and some interesting characters downtown and we started looking at options. It was still early and the rest of the day looked fine. Tomorrow the rain was setting in so did we really want to stay in the Sue? There was an interesting little town just 80k further on. We could ride there and spend a rest day in a nice little lakeside tourist town. Well, I convinced Dave and Stephane to go for it.

It was hot but the ridding was great and by 6:00 we were pulling into Bruce Mines. Great meal, nice ice cream and a nice little town campground. Already spied out the Laundry-mat, coffee shop, grocery store and library. Everything we need. Love it when a plan comes together.

Last Day in the USA

What a great way to finish our time in Michigan. The day started with our neibour Joyce giving us some pepperoni sticks for the road. Such lovely people. We had a bit of easy paved road to take us to our breakfast location the “Triangle Restaurant”. The ladies that ran the place were real cards and the food was great. A good feed always helps.

The next section of the route took us along the highway. Luckily it was Sunday morning and the traffic was light. Made for much less stressful riding. Stephane stopped for some blueberries and we ended up meeting a lovely family. They really wanted a picture of us with their son Oscar. A great kid. After about 50k on the highway we stopped for lunch. The rest of the day would be in the bush. What will we get? It turned out great, a bit of everything, paved country road, gravel and trail. Luckily it was all rideable.

After the obligatory, pizza and ice cream we pulled into the state park in Brimley. Since it’s summer the campground was quite full. We had a car parked on one side of our site when we arrived and while setting up a gentleman asked if he could park on the other side of our site. Since we don’t take up much room we said sure. He ended up gifting us some lovely local beer and we had a great chat with him and his family. A little while later the lady on the other side of us gifted us some water. Today, the gifts kept coming. Feeling super lucky to be out here experiencing all this kindness 🙏

Last Day in the USA

Sand, Highways & Lakes

A great day today. After packing up our gear we had a quick ride into the local town. A breakfast and resupply had us set for another day of riding. Who is kidding who here. Everyday is another day of riding.

It was not long before we were on the back roads. Many have been fine but today we had a section of sandy washboard trail for a good 15k of the first 25k. Now it was mostly rideable but some sections the sand was so deep we had to push. Needless to say a-lot of energy was expended on our first section of the day.

When we arrived in Shingleton we were ready for a break. There was only one option “The Bears Den” so that’s where we went. Now getting fresh vegetables in the states had been a real challenge. What did we find. All you can eat salad bar with fruit, veggies and soup. How good was that. It was all fresh and I have to say the best I have had on the whole trip. Thanks Tammy for the awesome food! If you’re ever passing through, check it out.

After this little feed it was back on the peddles. The route so far has been absolutely amazing at keeping us away from heavy traffic. That was about to change. We had 24k on the highway with a fair bit of traffic and a pretty small paved shoulder. We really could not safely ride the shoulder so we ended up peddling the gravel part of the shoulder. At least it was safe. Definitely not a lot of fun though.

The next section was back in the bush. More crappy sand? We would not know until we tried it. It turned out to be awesome! Great gravel roads and paths in a bird sanctuary. Really cool views and super fun flowing gravel road. We definitely needed that after what we had in the morning.

The last 25k was on paved road with a bit of a rain shower. Really got a bit of everything today. We found a great campground at North Manistique Lake. A day filled with surprises.

A great day today. After packing up our gear we had a quick ride into the local town. A breakfast and resupply had us set for another day of riding. Who is kidding who here. Everyday is another day of riding.

It was not long before we were on the back roads. Many have been fine but today we had a section of sandy washboard trail for a good 15k of the first 25k. Now it was mostly rideable but some sections the sand was so deep we had to push. Needless to say a-lot of energy was expended on our first section of the day.

When we arrived in Shingleton we were ready for a break. There was only one option “The Bears Den” so that’s where we went. Now getting fresh vegetables in the states had been a real challenge. What did we find. All you can eat salad bar with fruit, veggies and soup. How good was that. It was all fresh and I have to say the best I have had on the whole trip. Thanks Tammy for the awesome food! If you’re ever passing through, check it out.

After this little feed it was back on the peddles. The route so far has been absolutely amazing at keeping us away from heavy traffic. That was about to change. We had 24k on the highway with a fair bit of traffic and a pretty small paved shoulder. We really could not safely ride the shoulder so we ended up peddling the gravel part of the shoulder. At least it was safe. Definitely not a lot of fun though.

The next section was back in the bush. More crappy sand? We would not know until we tried it. It turned out to be awesome! Great gravel roads and paths in a bird sanctuary. Really cool views and super fun flowing gravel road. We definitely needed that after what we had in the morning.

The last 25k was on paved road with a bit of a rain shower. Really got a bit of everything today. We found a great campground at North Manistique Lake. A day filled with surprises.

The Bike Pack

We had a 40k ride into Marquette and found a great spot for coffee and breakfast. Thunderstorms had gotten us up early and we had some rain coming through town. What better time than to recharge in the comfort of the coffee shop. We also ran into Stephane who joined us for coffee.

After catching up and waiting for the weather to clear we decided to all ride together. The “Bike Pack” headed out. We had a nice mixture of bike trail along the lake, gravel roads and sone atv tracks, I have to admit the atv tracks get real soft and make the riding real challenging. Luckily the worst of it never lasts too long.

After a few hours on the road we were all ready for some food. We stopped in Au Train and found a great spot for pizza and ice cream. I was so hungry I ordered the double scoop. A bit over the top I must say. The pizza was awesome and definitely needed. It was a quick 13k to the campground. Since it was Friday night, unfortunately the campground was full. I convinced them to allow us to camp anyway. Very nice young men, I must say. Another day down.

When your a big Frog in a small pond 🤔

We were then off out of town. Quite pavement turned to gravel and as we made our way further into the bush the road got a bit rough and definitely a lot smaller. About 2 hours in we decided to stop at a crossroads with quite the interesting array of undergarments. I guess “what goes on in the bush stays in the bush”.

After lunch the road continued to challenge us. With quite a few wash outs and very large water holes. A few we had to wade through and some we could just walk our bikes around the edge. The common element. Frogs, Frogs, Frogs, everywhere. We even encountered one big one who was not about to leave his position. The big guy on the the block I guess.

The road slowly improved as the afternoon wore on and by 3:30 we were pulling in to Big Bay. What a great little place. Stopped at the Thunder Bay Inn for a meal and desert, then over to the ice cream shop for desert. Did I just have two deserts? Finished by finding this great camping spot right on the water.

As we were setting up our tents we met Carrol, Michele and Cody the dog. They were struggling with there new tent and thought we could help. I love the tent puzzles so we got things sorted pretty well. Another full day down.

Some days it’s harder riding than others. That’s normal, but sometimes, it’s something else. I don’t know for anyone else, but once in a while I need a break. I will be riding and it’s just not working. It’s hard to explain. Anyway, this happens once in a while. When it does I know what to do. Just get off the bike and do something else. It does not take long but if I don’t do it the biking becomes a chore. We don’t want that to happen do we.

Well today was one of those days. I was just not enjoying it. So we decided to finish early and relax. Found a great campsite, had a shower, a shave even did a little laundry. To top off the evening we headed down to a retro drive in. It was so good. Even played old time tunes from the eighties. Tomorrow is another day. 👍🚵🏻‍♂️

Two States done, One to Go

Today’s story actually begins last night. We had found a park in the small town of Mellon. Although the internet said it was a good place to camp we did see a no camping sign when we arrived. We were pretty tired from a long day and it was a perfect spot. We decided to risk it and stay. What could possibly go wrong? Well, as we were eating our dinner an unmarked black sedan pulled up and parked on the other end of the park. It stuck around for about a half hour then slow rolled past us. We waved at the officer and wished him a nice evening. We discussed our situation and decided to look for a better option. The state park was only 4K away, we could make it before dark. Decision made, off we rode. We found a spot in the park campground and put our tents up in the failing light, problem solved.

We had a pretty easy run this morning. A couple of hours riding on good roads and we were approaching Ironwood. Found a great spot for second breakfast then crossed over the state line into Michigan. My last state on the route. Sweet! Only ~900k to the Canadian border. Even though it was only lunchtime we called it for the day. Ever since we got drenched in Duluth all our stuff has stayed pretty damp. The time had come to fix that. Trust me, damp sweaty clothes and equipment makes for an aromatic show you don’t want to experience. Enough said. Time to get things sorted.

Two States done, One to Go

Today’s story actually begins last night. We had found a park in the small town of Mellon. Although the internet said it was a good place to camp we did see a no camping sign when we arrived. We were pretty tired from a long day and it was a perfect spot. We decided to risk it and stay. What could possibly go wrong? Head Wind

We started the day with a camp breakfast: strong coffee and granola. We were then off and riding. A beautiful morning I must say. The forrest feels different here and with the mist hanging around it’s very interesting to ride through. Think Last of the Mohican’s. Dave and I had decided to adjust our route a little. The back roads are numerous and very quiet. Makes for some great riding. It was not long before we were pulling into Cable. What an amazing little town. Very bike focussed. Just as we were turning onto the Main Street two other cyclists merged with us. Doug and Therese are avid cyclists too, so we decided to have coffee together. Well, what lovely people, they insisted that they buy us our breakfast. Thanks so much you guys 🙏. We had a great chat over coffee and the four of us rode out of town together. After several k’s Doug and Therese departed, we will not forget the wonderful town of Cable, Wisconsin.

The wind built as the afternoon went on and the headwind was taking its toll. Even though our total distance was similar to yesterday my legs were definitely feeling it. Add in one navigation foe pas and it made for a challenging afternoon.

It was around 5:00pm when we pulled into Mellen. We had read that we can camp at the local park. Ready for supper and a rest.

Wisconsin?

We decided to have a rest day in Duluth. After all that rain it would take a bit to dry out. The R&R was welcome rest bit. But a day was all it took and I was ready to get going.

Funny story, when I was getting ready for the trip I had done a bit planning but nothing too detailed. I knew we were going through Minnesota and I knew we were going through Michigan. But that was it, in my mind two states then back in Canada. Well on my off day I started planning the route out of Minnesota and into Michigan. I got a bit confused 🤔. There was a section of the route missing, weird right. Anyway, I thought I would ask Stephane to see if he had noticed this. Well, funny thing on the way across the continent, I just forgot the whole state of Wisconsin, didn’t I. Well done Roy. Bravo! Sorry Wisconsin. Anyway what’s 300 more k, onwards we go.

We weaved our way through the streets of Duluth and after a bit of searching made our way onto the bridge. Goodbye Minnesota hello Michigan, no sorry, I mean hello Wisconsin. Found a great breakfast spot and then we set off. The day was great with a mix of bike path, paved road and gravel. There was even a bit of sand to keep the riding easy. I must admit to loving the riding here in the states. We seemed to find a good place to have a stop every hour or so. Even the campsite had a bar with great beer appetizers and interesting patrons. Day one in Wisconsin completed!

A Superior Day

Well Minnesota is fast coming to the end. Our day today was pretty easy. A quick ride out of the bush and before we knew it we were in Finland. Time for first breakfast. Now, usually I am doing lunch at this time so I must admit to being quite hungry. We continued. After a brief time on the highway we arrived! I have been looking forward to my time around the Great Lakes and this was the start “Lake Superior”. The largest fresh water lake in the world by surface are. For the next ~3 weeks we will be skirting her. Very impressive I must say. And the cool breeze she provides, so nice. For the rest of the afternoon we mainly had paved pathway as we made our way south towards Duluth. We did get a bit of highway here and there. For the most part the shoulder was adequate and the traffic fairly moderate. It did get a bit dicey in a few spots. Tomorrow Duluth!

After the day before, we had decided to calm it down a bit. No rain in the forecast. We started the day with a bush coffee. My friend Todd had insisted I upgrade to his home roasted beans. I added a new filter to up my game. Wow, so much better. Thanks Todd, what an upgrade to the coffee. After breakfast it was time to break camp and move on.

Nice! A brief 10k ride and it was time for second breakfast. The lady making my order had a little trouble with my eggs. New frying pan was too non stick. Anyway my order was for two eggs. Magically I ended up with four. How did she know?

A bit more riding and it was time for lunch. We ended up trying the Walleye Tacos. Wow, were they good. Pretty sure I ended up with a whole fish myself. Delicious. About 1/3k down the road we stopped again, this time for dessert. Ice Cream, of course. Now the riding this day was pretty easy, but the eating, that was full on.

Wow, what a day. After an amazing visit with the Grutners it was time to hit the road. Thanks so much Rick and Cathy. It was so, just like old times. After breakfast we were on the road again. I was a little taken aback how the old pulp and paper mill was totally gone. We passed through an open area were the mill used to be and across the bridge back into the states. We had a couple of stops to make so our first order of business was a coffee.

By the time we hit the road the rain had begun. To be honest it was mainly light rain but it lasted all day. And I do mean on and off all day. We were on highway 53 for the first 60k. Nice wide shoulders but the vehicle spray definitely added to our damp condition.

The next 60k was forestry roads. Not too bad but as the day developed they started getting a little sloppy. When we were right in the middle of nowhere, bang! Flat rear tire. Now field fixes are never that much fun but in the rain, that was a new opportunity I had not experienced before. And I do mean opportunity. After about 125k of slogging we made it to a paved road. Nice, we were close to Echo Lake. 10k later we made it! A nice tavern with great beer and awesome pizza. We finally made it to the campsite after a further 3k in the dark. It was now 10:00 pm. Wet, dirty and worn out, we had arrived. Wow, 7 1/2 hours in the saddle & 235k and that’s a new record day. Dave’s having so much fun hanging out with me. 🤔
